Bucky's Buddies: Building Temporary Structures
Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 7:30 PM - Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 10:00 PM (EST)
Somerville, United States
If you've ever been smitten with slick structures, low-cost construction, temporary dwellings, or geometric marvels, this is the class for you. You'll learn what goes into the design and fabrication of temporary structures, specifically geodesic domes. We'll team-build two domes, one of metal and one of wood, which will ultimately be put to use as shelters for the Occupy movement. Along the way you'll pick up some basic wood- and metal-working skills, an understanding of load-bearing geometries, tips-n-tricks for low-cost DIY building, and camaraderie with your fellow builders. Also, you'll be able to boast some new knowledge of Bucky Fuller and sling around cool words like Tensegrity and Dymaxion.
- Learn how to design and construct a customized geodesic dome
- Actually build two domes, working in teams
- Install these domes in a useful location, like Occupy Boston/Harvard
- Develop metalworking and woodworking skills
- Have a good time doing meaningful work
Materials will be provided. The materials cost per student is $60, payable to the instructor at the start of class.
A native of Massachusetts, Bevan Weissman exists in duality as an artist and engineer: trained in both disciplines, his work straddles the line between the two. His areas of expertise include large scale installation, public art, and mixed-media sculpture. He has put up a dome or two in his day, acting as his camp's Infrastructure Coordinator at Burning Man. He also shares a birthday with Sergio Leone, his favorite director of Spaghetti Westerns.
